I posted a short video of a pigeon with an abnormally long neck on TikTok. Anyone could see it was made with AI. Even so, a game began in the comments of treating it as real. No one wrote the rules down, but they are clear. The neck is never used as evidence. Suspicion of AI is aimed at the color, the length of the legs, even the ordinary pigeon walking in the foreground, while the neck, the least possible thing in the picture, is accepted as a given. Authenticity has always been decided not by the face but by details like ears and hands. Then come sightings that take the bird’s existence for granted: “haven’t seen it around lately,” “some days are like that.” People who earnestly asked “Is this AI?” got almost no response, while likes gathered around those who kept up the act: “Oh, it’s AI? I couldn’t tell, we have the same pigeon at home.” This was not a game of exposing a lie. It was a game of seeing how far you could play along with something you knew was a lie. What interested me was less the image of a long-necked pigeon than the way it was received.

The name was settled inside this game too. “Pong Ligeon” came from viewers playing with “long pigeon” by swapping the first letters. It is not a name I gave it. I took what viewers called it as a joke, made that the title, and engraved it on the nameplate. Once engraved, the joke becomes the real name. I later learned that “pong” is British slang for a bad smell.

The frame is an ornate, antique-style silver frame, the kind that looks made for a portrait painting, which I found and bought on Mercari. Inside is not an oil portrait but a single image like a portrait photograph of a bird standing against a white backdrop. A portrait frame is meant for someone with a name; a white-backdrop photograph is meant to record people, products and specimens under the same conditions. Between those two mismatched formats, one pigeon stands with a look that asks why it is here. Before any reasoning, I liked how out of place it was.

Beside the frame, the original video loops on an iPhone, and about 8,000 comments are printed on 67 m of 80 mm thermal receipt paper. A receipt is proof that a transaction took place. Here each comment is treated as a signature attesting that the pigeon was there. A “it was there” written in full knowledge of the joke is accepted in full knowledge of the joke. A photograph was once the evidence that something had been there. Here the evidence came first, and the photograph went into the frame afterwards.

I made the pigeon, but the ones who named it and made it real were the people who saw it. A bird that never existed came to have existed, countersigned by people who knew.

I made a video of hands growing out of the walls of an alley, clapping along to IOSYS’s song “Endless Tewi-ma Park.” I then released the clapping as a TikTok effect so that anyone could play with it.

Some time later, I found that the official KFC Kazakhstan account had posted the video as its own advertisement, with KFC storefronts and logos composited into it with AI, without my permission.

✧ is the ▔▔▔▔Γ of ⟟⍜⛧⍦꙰. Between ∩̸∩̶ ∩̷∩̴ ∩̷∩̸, a ≫̵ falls ⇣̵⇣̵⇣̵, and the ꙰ always remains ᵘ̴̶̸⧏̵̸̶◌.

When ║̶ ۞ ║ is ¥҉⋱, the ∴̶҉∵̸̶∴̵ becomes 𓆇. ☠️☠️ does not count the 𖦹. When 𓁶ǁ̴≡̷⧹̶𓂾̷𓂾̴ ✹̸, only ⁂̵ was there.

The first ⟟⍜⛧ was waiting for ⍦꙰ in a corner of ▔▔▔▔Γ. When three ≫̵ lined up, ⇣̵⇣̵⇣̵ turned into ¥҉⋱, and a single ◌ remained above ∩̸∩̶ ∩̷∩̴ ∩̷∩̸. No one called it ✹̸.

Before ⎋ᵉ̶̷̵≮̴̴⨳̷, the ⟁̵ ⇣̵ the ░̸ three times. The ◌ reflected in ▔▔▔▔Γ, a ⛧ belonging to no one, stays in ║̵ ║̶║̵ ║̶ only for the length of a ≫̵. Each time the ꙰ calls the ⍦꙰, the ∴̶҉∵̸̶∴̵ draws a little closer to ¥҉⋱.

When walking between ║̵ ║̶║̵ ║̶, the ꙰ is slightly ⧏̵. This is not because of ⁂̵, but because ⎋ᵉ̶̷̵≮̴̴⨳̷ still remembers the ⟁̵. The ░̸ always arrives late.

The viewer reads the ꙰, counts the ⍦꙰, and eventually stops ¥҉⋱. At that moment ∩̸∩̶ ∩̷∩̴ ∩̷∩̸ ⟆, and ☠️☠️ is said to have been there from the start. ║̶ ۞ ║ called it ⧏̵; ᵘ̴̶̸ called it ◌. Neither was ⎋.

☠️☠️ keeps no record. ☠️☠️ simply stops just short of ⟆ and leaves a single ⍜ between one ◌ and another. When the viewer picks it up, the ∴̶҉∵̸̶∴̵ quietly stops ¥҉⋱.

So when speaking of ✧, there is no need to count the ⟟⍜⛧⍦꙰. Open the ▔▔▔▔Γ and the ≫̵ is already there; ║̶ ۞ ║ has long since ⇣̵.

✧ is not ⁂̵. ✧ is neither ⍜ nor ⧏̵. ✧ is only trying, between ✹̸ and ✹̸, to become ✧ once more.

Rainbow-coloured text on a dark background: “AI art should be looked like AI, not like humans.”

Civitaiでそのページを開くと、「AI art should be looked like AI, not like humans.」(AIアートは、人間のようにではなく、AIのように見えるべきだ)と書かれていた。

As frontier models keep being updated, image-generation models from only a few years ago tend to be treated like antiques. While running Stable Diffusion locally again after a long time and playing with old models, I happened to remember Anything V3. When I opened its page on Civitai, it read: “AI art should be looked like AI, not like humans.”

The moment I read it, something caught me. After that, I spent a while playing with SD1.5.

Anything V3 is a model specialized in anime-style images. Even when I lowered the number of steps or gave it abstract words, anime silhouettes that looked like something I had seen somewhere surfaced on their own. What I found interesting was how, out of an unclear image, a fragment of an illustration from that era would suddenly appear, one I felt I had seen before. In a haze where both outline and meaning are blurred, only an eye or the flow of hair abruptly shows up. They are not any one person’s drawing, yet they look like someone’s.

To me, a photograph is a “something”: the world abstracted into particular meanings and relations through light and various other means. Even when I output these and try to rebuild a world from them, what comes out is only “something” like a world.

carnwo is an artist based in Tokyo. The work has moved from CG and sculptural images built from photographs to image generation, used as an extension of photography. Grand Prix, IMA next “UNREAL/REAL” (2022) and TOKYO FRONTLINE PHOTO AWARD 2024. Since 2026 carnwo has released short videos on TikTok, among them a pigeon with an impossibly long neck and hands that grow from the walls of an alley to applaud, using the way viewers receive them as material for the work. Pong Ligeon (2026) frames the pigeon under the name viewers gave it in the comments, with some 8,000 of those comments printed on thermal receipt paper; it was shown at MEET YOUR ART FESTIVAL 2026.
